About Us

Midway Jiu Jitsu is more than just a place to train — it's a space built on connection, strength, and community. Inspired by the Buddhist philosophy of "the middle way," centred on finding balance, we work hard, show up with intensity, and leave the ego at the door.

Based in Mangawhai, we're here to help you become the best version of yourself through the art of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, whether you're new to the mats or a seasoned grappler.

We've also added yoga and tea ceremonies once a week — yoga on the mats, tea upstairs. A chance to slow down and find some stillness alongside the grind of training. From 2027, that steps up to four sessions a week, alongside a big jump in Jiu Jitsu — six days a week, including new morning and lunchtime classes.

Midway is about consistency, not perfection. We're building a culture where everyone supports each other and pushes to improve, without losing the fun, the laughs, or the love of the game.

I've been training Jiu Jitsu for the past 9 years and currently hold a brown belt. Three years ago, I packed up and spent 12 months traveling the world to train with some of the best — including six months in Brazil with Mica Galvão and Alliance, and another four with John Danaher and the B-Team in Texas.

Midway Jiu Jitsu is something I've dreamed about for a long time. I'm passionate about the sport and want to help grow it here in New Zealand. I believe Jiu Jitsu is one of the most powerful tools for building confidence, discipline, and connection — and I'm building a space where people of all levels can experience that.

Back in 2017, I took a year away to travel and meditate — including over 150 days in silence — which deepened my interest in stillness. On top of that, I was introduced to tea ceremony over a decade ago by my older brother, and I've kept it up ever since. There's a real beauty in sitting down for a cup of tea in silence — it's simple and familiar, and it helps you find stillness in a way that's easy for anyone to step into. I'm excited to bring that into Midway too.

I've also spent 8 years teaching, the last two here at Mangawhai Beach School — and Midway actually started there. We've since outgrown that and moved into our own space, but that's where this all began.
